Jesus is my Shepherd

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
forever. Psalm 23:6

Today we take our final look at the ‘Shepherd’s Psalm’ as it relates to Jesus’ promise that He is the good shepherd. We have spent about a week just looking at the promises of God within it. We have seen how we are protected, loved, cared for, led, protected, to name but a few.

Today we see this great promise at the end of the psalm. Surely all these blessings that we have been looking at all week will follow me all the days of my life and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Thats worth getting out of bed for in the morning isn’t it?

Goodness and mercy shall follow me, us. In the Passion translation it puts it like this: “So why would I fear the future?
For I’m being pursued only by Your goodness and unfailing love. Then afterwards–when my life is through, I’ll return to your glorious presence to be forever with you!”

Well, that just about sums it up doesn’t it? When Jesus said that He was the shepherd this is what He had in mind. Don’t fear the future… It sounds like something else that He said doesn’t it. He knew that when He had ascended into heaven that He would send His Spirit. Pursuing us with goodness and love. That sounds like Him doesn’t it.

Being in Father’s glorious presence for ever, well that sounds like the hope that we have. The whole promise of the gospel, wrapped up in this single psalm. Amazing. I don’t really know what else to say to this. I just want the psalm to speak for itself, one more time. Read it, as a prayer. As a declaration of faith. Read it believing that despite your current situation and however life may seem, this is The truth and this will change your life forever. Because it will.

Psalm 23
THE GOOD SHEPHERD

The Lord is my Fierce Protector and my Pastor.
I always have more than enough.
He offers a resting place for me
In his luxurious love.
His tracks take me to an oasis of peace,
The quiet brook of bliss.
That’s where he restores and revives my life.
He opens before me pathways to God’s pleasure,
And leads me along in his footsteps of righteousness,
So that I can bring honor to his name.
Lord, even when your path takes me through
The valley of deepest darkness
Fear will never conquer me, for you already have!
You remain close to me and lead me through it all the way.
Your authority is my strength and my peace.
The comfort of your love takes away my fear.
I’ll never be lonely, for you are near.
You become my delicious feast
Even when my enemies dare to fight.
You anoint me with the fragrance of your Holy Spirit;
You give me all I can drink of you until my heart overflows.
So why would I fear the future?
For I’m being pursued only by
Your goodness and unfailing love.
Then afterwards–when my life is through,
I’ll return to your glorious presence
To be forever with you!

Amen.
