After these things the Lord appointed seventy others also, and sent them two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go. Luke 10:1
You have heard me say before how the Old Testament is the New Testament concealed and that the New Testament is the Old Testament revealed. Well, never more so than in today’s verse.
Jesus has got a whole load of people following Him, for a whole range of reasons. So are totally in. The disciples for example. They have fully committed everything to following Him, learning His teachings and putting into practise all that He said and asked of them.
Next you have a wider group who were following Him. They were in as well, though maybe not quite to the depth of the 12. They followed Him as much as they could, they were trying His example as much as they could. Good solid ‘church members’ that could be counted on when needed.
Then there was the crowd. By far this was the largest section of the group. Wherever Jesus went they followed. They cam to watch the show, to enjoy the company, to grab the food at the events. They agreed with much of what He said, would like to to do more for them but, they wouldn’t or couldn’t totally commit.
Then there were the opponents. Every time Jesus went to go somewhere, teach something new, perform a miracle, they were there. “Can you do that, why are you doing that, it hasn’t been done like that before” etc. You know the type.
If Jesus had carried on like this He could have continues to be successful. He could have continued to perform great works and teach deep truths. These people could have learned from Him. But even He, as the Son of God, could only be in one place at one time. Even He only had 24 hours per day. Even He got tired and weary. He needed a team.
By this point He had sent out the disciples on their own and they had seen marvellous things happen in His name. They had seen the sick healed, they had seen the oppressed set free. They had seen His power shared out amongst them and they had shared in His success.
Now Jesus was sending out the seventy. Its not the first time that we had seen this. If you go back to the old Testament, Moses had done exactly the same. In Exodus 24 and Numbers 11 we see God telling Moses to call together 70 elders. Numbers 11:16-17 says this:
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Gather for me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them, and bring them to the tent of meeting, and let them take their stand there with you. And I will come down and talk with you there. And I will take some of the Spirit that is on you and put it on them, and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, so that you may not bear it yourself alone.
Well, what Jesus did in today’s scripture is exactly what His Father had done several thousand years before. He called out the leaders, the faithful, the committed and He passed on some of His Spirit to them so that they could go out in His authority to perform the same teachings, the same miracles, the same deliverance that He did.
The same. He later did this again when at the day of Pentecost His Spirit came not just to a select few but to all believers. No look at this. The Spirit was conferred upon them so that they could have the same authority as Jesus. It was as if Jesus Himself were going.
When we receive the Holy Spirit we don’t get ‘a part of it.’ One Spirit that is shared around, everyone getting a bit. No! When we receive the Holy Spirit we are receiving all go Him. The whole power, plan and purpose of the Triune Godhead imparted into us. We can do all that Jesus did. We carry the same authority and anointing that He did.
WOW. Just stop and think on that today. You have the same anointing and authority that Jesus had when He walked the earth. If He was living your life, what would it be like on your home? What about at your work? Your social life? What impact would He have on those who you mix with every day?
Well, you have been sent. That is why you have received the Holy Spirit. You have been sent to your friends, to your colleagues, to your neighbours and your family. You have been sent on ahead of him, into every town and place where he Himself is going to return to.
He sent the twelve and then the seventy so that when He turned up the people knew about Him. We are sent too, sent so that when He turns up again people will not just know about Him but through our lives they will actually know Him.
He couldn’t do it all on His own, like Moses before couldn’t. Today, you minister can’t do it on His own either. The Spirit is calling, scripture is urging, will you be part of the team? Will you be sent? Will you prepare the way for the risen Lord?
